Here is a unique large old Navajo made old silver and turquoise ornamental piece and I am not exactly sure what this item is; I have put the question out there and have received two convincing responses. It is either a hair clip to be used for a ponytail or it is a neck piece, worn under the collar. The heavy silver piece has a strong 1-1/4 inch long shepherd's hook attached to it. I have been told it is a hair clip and the hook goes into a band of some sort that is holding the hair. You need long thick hair tied & then the hair would be spread out to the ends of the clip. It is beautiful when worn correctly. I have also be told this is for the neck, worn under the collar.
The piece is 2-1/2 inches wide and set with a genuine turquoise stone. It weighs 25 grams. Unmarked and unsigned, as is common for Native American jewelry from this time period, however the silver tests positive as coin silver or better. circa 1960-70s. Excellent condition.
