Navajo artist Calvin Peterson created this ring featuring a 14K gold stylized bear paw on a sterling silver ring shank. Please ignore the reflections seen in the face of the ring - the gold is very reflective and hence it was difficult to get a good view of the ring face straight on.
The face of the ring is 7/8 by 5/8 and the ring weighs about 13.7 grams. Size 11.

The overlay technique uses multiple layers of sterling silver soldered together to create a three dimensional effect. The top layer is a handmade, hand cut overlay created from a sheet of 14k gold that is then bonded to the base layer of sterling. The base layer background is oxidized, which turns the silver surface black. The oxidation brings out the contrast between the two pieces and makes the design more visible.
