This Zuni badger fetish was carved by an unknown Zuni carver. It measures about 2-3/4 inch long by 1-1/8 inch wide and weighs 48.7 grams. Inlaid with turquoise eyes. Turquoise prayer bundle tied to its back.
Perfect condition. This fetish is from my private collection and was purchased brand new by me about 20 years ago. I am downsizing my collection.
The badger is the guardian of the South. Zuni Indians believe in the six cardinal guardian fetishes. Each guardian fetish guards one of the six directions. The badger dominates the activities of husbandry and agriculture, relatively small but fierce and tenacious and has been known to prevail over animals far larger, as such they can be counted on in tight situations to display boldness and perseverance. Badger represents passion and persistence. He will not give up until he has reached a desired goal. Living close to the ground, he has great knowledge of the earth.
