Most Native American jewelry makers prefer working with "LAB" opals, which are man-made opals. Man-made opals have two advantages over genuine opals : 1) lab opals are less expensive than genuine opals - genuine opals are increasingly costly and 2) lab opals are more durable and they are easier to set, cut & polish genuine opals need moisture, without which they become brittle over time, resulting in cracks or breaks.
