New Santo Domingo Inlaid Thunderbird Tab Necklace, Rudy & Mary Coriz

Contemporary Santo Domingo hand made inlaid Thunderbird necklace featuring an inlaid thunderbird centerpiece, ten inlaid tabs and graduated turquoise heishi beads. Created by Santo Domingo artists Rudy & Mary Coriz. Item #1340

$ 525.00     Available: 1     Back

This contemporary Santo Domingo hand made necklace features a large inlaid Thunderbird, ten inlaid tabs (five on each side) and graduated turquoise beads. Everything about this necklace is big and bold! The necklace was created by Rudy & Mary Coriz from natural semi-precious stones. The necklace measures about 16" long from the back of the neck to the bottom of the Thunderbird. The Thunderbird is 2-3/4" tall by 2" wide. The tabs measure approx. 1-3/8" long by 9/16" wide. Finished with Sterling         silver cones, beads and hook. This necklace is a masterpiece of inlay work and handmade heishi beads. Please note: natural matrix spots can be seen in the necklace - these are not cracks or chips..it is just dark matrix.

Brand new and  in perfect condition. Hallmarked by the artists. Certificate of Authenticity and gift box included with your purchase.

This necklace is an updated version of the old Santo Domingo "Depression" necklaces. During the 1920's and 1930"s, materials were scarce and so the Santo Domingo indians used whatever materials were available to make these necklaces - materials such as broken bakelite shards, gypsum, colored plastic from combs, pails or restaurant spoons and forks, crushed turquoise chips, while old phonograph records or car battery casings were used as the backing material. These necklaces were sold to tourists along the highway or at RR stops for as little as 1-dollar during the Great Depression.
About the artists: Mary and Rudy Coriz are a husband and wife jewelry team from Santo Domingo Pueblo. Their jewelry features a  wide variety of stones arranged in interesting designs and color patterns.
