ZUNI JEWELRY
The Zuni Indians of New Mexico are known the world over for their distinctive jewelry - stone & shell channel & mosaic inlay, needlepoint, petit point, cluster and hand carved fetish jewelry. The Zuni silversmiths are particularly known for their lapidary skills. Both channel inlay (using precisely cut stones set on silver to form figures and designs) and cluster and needlepoint (setting small, similarly cut stones in geometric patterns) are traditional Zuni styles. Approximately 65 % of tribal members are involved in making jewelry, which is their principle source of income. Zuni jewelry reflects both traditional designs developed over 125 years ago as well as new contemporary styles.
